How to play The Oregon Trail game.

  1. Thank you for this video. I feel as though the instructions are missing soemthing things or are not quite clear. I do want to ask your opinion on a card since I was trying to research them. The cards "Inadequate Grass" and "Bad Water". For inadequate grass, can you play an ox to get rid of the card or do you have to wait until there are two to get rid of it? Do you wait until there are two of these cards for the one round draft to start before you die? These cards seem very confusing to me.

  2. Thank you for your question. First thing to note is that there are two cards of every calamity. ONLY TWO keep that in mind when reading the cards. However the number of each supply card varies.

How I understand the "Inadequate Grass" card is that you would play an oxen supply card which would free you of the calamity. However, I would not play an oxen card until the next inadequate grass card shows up, since one oxen card removes both calamity cards. There are only three oxen cards in the supply pile, which makes them pretty rare. As long as there is only one inadequate grass card on the table your oxen are fine. Perhaps hungry a bit, but still alive;). Even if someone interprets the game to mean that you need to play one ox per card, there are only two inadequate grass cards and therefor removing one only will get the same effect. With limited supply cards, I would not recommend ever playing a supply card if you don't have to.

Now the "Bad Water" card can really be subject to opinion. It is similar that it takes two cards to have an effect on your oxen. I believe the makers of the game meant it to be played as an either or. Play a clean water card or play an oxen if you get two bad water cards, since oxen are rarer and harder to come by.

However, I can see others reading it as the water is still bad after your oxen have died. And that in order to remove the two bad water calamity cards you have to play the clean water supply card also in addition to the oxen card. Either way, if one has clean water card it makes sense to play it when you have one, as there are more clean water cards in the game.

So take that only as opinion. Would love to hear how you decide to play it.

  3. I read on another blog (not in any official rules, I don't think) that bad water or inadequate grass cards could be removed by playing a town or fort card. What do you think? Does that seem like a fair play in an already challenging game?

    1. Town cards can remove a calamity, but not a fort. However, you will not be able to collect a supply card if you remove the calamity. It is an OR option.
